OLFA: Collection and Analysis of Behavioral Data with the Four-armed Olfactometer

The four-armed olfactometer has been widely used in the study of the chemical ecology of a number of arthropods. Hand recording with a personal computer represents a good compromise between hand recording with pencil and paper and the video recording/tracking systems which allow the experimenter to study the insect behavior under a number of points of view but require expensive equipment.

The program performs the following functions:
bulletRun an experiment. The data that can be recorded by the program are: the time spent in the different areas of the olfactometer, the number of entries into each area, the area that was entered first, the behaviors observed, the stimulus, and the insect.
bulletAnalysis of a single experiment. This makes possible a detailed analysis of a single experiment which has been run previously. It detects time effects in insect activity or helps find the best experiment duration.
bulletAnalysis of a set of experiments. This part makes it possible to analyse a set of experiments carried out to study the behavior of an insect against a stimulus testing different specimens against the same stimulus.

Requirements: IBM-pc compatible. Note that this is a DOS program (but it runs correctly in a command window within Windows).

Cost: $50
